Kirsters Baish| This past Friday, former President Barack Obama bashed President Donald Trump during a speech he was giving at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Instead of responding with anger, President Trump responded with a joke, claiming that Obama is good for putting a crowd to sleep.
During Obama’s speech, he told the University’s students that they are becoming adults during a time when “the privileged … want to keep us divided and keep us angry and keep us cynical, because it helps them maintain the status quo and keep their power and keep their privilege.”
He went on to claim that the Trump administration is “a symptom, not the cause” of this division. “It did not start with Donald Trump,” Obama stated.
President Trump was in Fargo, North Dakota at a campaign fundraiser on Friday when he explained to the crowd that a journalist had asked him if he had seen Obama’s speech.
Trump said, “I’m sorry. I watched it but I fell asleep. I found he’s very good, very good for sleeping.”
Take a look at the clip of Trump’s speech below:
The President touched on Obama’s comment that our country’s booming economy was partly thanks to his own administration, correcting him.
Obama claimed that during his presidency, our country began the biggest and longest streak of job creation that our country has ever seen. He went on to claim that this made it possible for wealthy Americans to pay their “fair share” in taxes in order to “help folks coming up behind them.”

President Trump spoke on Obama’s comment saying that the former president “was trying to take credit for this incredible thing that is happening to our country … I have to say this to President Obama, it wasn’t him.”
He went on, “If the Democrats got in with their agenda in November, two years ago, instead of having (a Gross Domestic Product) 4.2 (percent) up, I believe honestly you’d have 4.2 down. You’d be in negative numbers right now. We were heading south. It was the weakest recovery … since the Great Depression. It was barely a recovery, and now this is called not recovery. This is called rocket ship.”
Trump reminded Americans that the job report from August shows incredible numbers with hourly wages increasing by 2.9 percent and unemployment rates have stayed low at 2.9 percent. This is a number our country hasn’t seen in regards to unemployment since 2000.
The Western Journal reports:
Trump has often touted that the nation is experiencing the lowest unemployment rates for African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics ever recorded.
The GDP grew at 1.6 percent during Obama’s final year in office in 2016. During Trump’s first year in office, the rate was 2.3 percent.
The day after Trump’s election in 2016, the Dow Jones Industrial Average spiked over 250 points, closing at a record high of 18,589.
Over the next year, it steadily increased and now sits just under 26,000.
The 31 percent rise in the stock market during Trump’s first year represents the best tally since the 1930s, when the market was recovering from the 1929 crash.
Earlier in the Summer, Larry Kudlow, the President’s head economic adviser, gave credit to our country’s booming economy to four things that the current administration did that the Obama White House definitely did not.
“We’ve lowered tax rates, we’ve rolled back regulations, we’ve unleashed energy, we’re moving to fix the broken world trading system,” Kudlow said.
