Kirsters Baish| Three men will be put to death after committing a heinous crime in Delhi, India. It was December 16, 2012, and 23-year-old Jyoti Singh and a male friend went to the movies. At the time, Singh was working her way to becoming a physiotherapist. The movie ended around 9:30 p.m. Singh and her friend got on a bus that they thought was heading to their destination. Jyoti Singh did not make it home that night.
Six rowdy young thugs were messing around on the bus. They harassed both Singh and her friend, Awindra Pandey. Pandey tried to defend himself, but they beat him, gagged him, and beat him down with an iron pipe.
The following is extremely graphic, so beware. The men spent an hour raping Singh, both with the lead pipe and their own genitalia. They beat her and bit her.
When the men were finished with her, they threw both Pandey and Singh off the bus, while it was still moving. The bus driver reportedly tried to run the two over, but Pandey pulled Singh away just in time. The two were found around 11 p.m., barely clothed and covered in blood.
Singh was horribly mangled. It was reported that her intestine was hanging out. 13 days later, she passed away from her injuries.
Conservative Tribune reports of the case:
The horrific crime sparked protests throughout India and around the world demanding justice for “Nirbhaya,” as Singh was called by the Indian media.
The perpetrators were arrested within days, and all six were convicted.
One of them was a juvenile when he committed the crime; he was released after three years in prison.
The driver of the bus, Ram Singh, hanged himself in his jail cell in 2013.
The brother of the bus driver, Mukesh, actually tried to blame the horrific crime on the victim. He claimed of Singh, “A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy.” The comment was made during a 2015 interview. He also reportedly said, “When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape.”
If you’re angry about Mukesh’s comments, you’ll be happy about the next bit. He is set to be hung for his heinous crimes. He, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma all lost their final appeals on Monday to India’s Supreme Court. They will not likely be pardoned by the president… meaning their fates will all be the noose.
Akshay Thakur did not contest his death sentence, and he will meet the same fate.
Asha Devi, Jyoti Singh’s grieving mother, explained that the final ruling was “very happy news.” She also said, however, that she is done waiting to see justice served.
She explained to the media, “We have had many judgments. Now the only thing I want to hear is the news that the savage beasts have been hanged.”
Hopefully this mother will finally see justice served and have closure after losing her beloved daughter.
