HIDDEN IN OMNIBUS: GOP & Democrats Fully Fund a Border Wall … But There’s A BIG Catch

ELDER PATRIOT – There was a good reason President Trump is livid with Congress.  Establishment leadership – Ryan, McConnell, Schumer, and Pelosi – stuck a thumb in the president’s eye with a number of provisions they included in the bloated $1.3 Trillion Omnibus they sent to him.

Trump made tightening the security on our southern border a primary plank of his agenda.  Aside from the flow of criminals and drugs that cross the border from Mexico into the United States, the economic costs of unfettered immigration are staggering.

The war we are fighting – and, losing – against the flow of illegal aliens and contraband that crosses our southern border currently costs $18 Billion annually, according to The Economist.

That alone makes the border wall a cost effective solution to the problem of policing our border.  But the total costs dwarf that amount.  Entitlements, community policing and fire protection, schools, crime, social services, displaced American workers and lower wages for those Americans who are working, medical care, costs related to judicial proceedings and imprisonment, even uninsured motorist insurance are just a few of the costs that run to more than $100 Billion annually.

Add to that the devastating effects of opioid addiction that costs society in excess of $55 Billion annually on everything from healthcare and treatment costs, costs to the criminal justice system, and lost workplace productivity and you can see why $25 Billion is a small price to pay to address these societal problems in a meaningful way.

That’s what makes these lying sacks of spit so despicable.  They dedicated more money to funding the building of a wall to protect Jordan from the Syrian threat to its northern border than they dedicated to funding “security” on our own border.

On page 375, the omnibus says:

For the ‘‘Counter-Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Train and Equip Fund’’, $1,769,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2019 …

That these funds may be used in such amounts as the Secretary of Defense may determine to enhance the border security of nations adjacent to conflict areas including Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, and Tunisia resulting from actions of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

That’s on top of the money allocated earlier in SEC. 9011 of the omnibus for,

Up to $500,000,000 of funds appropriated by this Act for the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in ‘‘Operation and Maintenance, Defense-Wide’’ may be used to provide assistance to the Government of Jordan to support the armed forces of Jordan and to enhance security along its borders.

Compare that to less than $1.6 billion for increased border security the bill gives Trump for protecting our southern border.  Even that paltry sum comes with strings attached that forbid the construction of any of the prot0types the president wants.

The bill contains three separate outlays for changes to physical border barriers:

  • $251 million for 14 miles of new secondary fencing along the border in the San Diego sector.
  • $445 million to replace existing fencing. According to congressional aides, this should refurbish 45 miles worth of barriers.
  • $641 million for 33 miles of new fencing and levees in the Rio Grande Valley sector.

That is why President Trump threw down the gauntlet to Republicans and Democrats, alike who think this will bury Trump’s party in the midterms later this year.

The view from here is these pompous Washington elites have made a serious miscalculation.  Trump owns the bully pulpit and he knows how to use it.  By the time we get to October, Trump will own the issue and they will either pass the budget he wants or he will let them explain to their constituents why the government has been shut down when the November elections roll around.
