Kirsters Baish| After social media empire Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg’s recent hearing before Congress, many Americans became increasingly concerned that the website is censoring news that they are seeing on the social media site. The truth is that Facebook is filtering and censoring news, and there is a way to stop it. This article is about how you can prevent it from happening to you.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg went in front of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives in Washington last week. While in front of the committee, Zuckerberg admitted that the social media platform does indeed change its algorithm in order to prevent certain news from appearing on people’s news feeds. Zuckerberg was questioned by Republican Marsha Blackburn saying, “We’ve done one hearing on the algorithms, I chair a communications and technology subcommittee here, we’re getting ready to do a second one on algorithms. We’re going to do one next week on prioritization so I’d like to ask you, do you subjectively manipulate your algorithms to prioritize or censor speech?”
The Facebook CEO answered, “Congresswoman, we don’t think what we are doing is censoring speech, I think there are types of content like terrorism which I think we all agree we don’t want to have on our service, so we build a system that can identify those and can remove that content and we’re very proud of that work.”
A lot of Facebook users started questioning if the popular social media website was strategically hiding news from them. The truth of the matter is that Facebook is in fact hiding news.
Facebook has recently begun ranking “trusted sources” of news, Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post; “Today I’m sharing our second major update this year: to make sure the news you see, while less overall, is high quality. I’ve asked our product teams to make sure we prioritize news that is trustworthy, informative, and local. And we’re starting next week with trusted sources.” Regardless of Zuckerberg’s messaging, establishment media and far-left outlets have seen a huge booston Facebook’s platform while independent publishers have dropped.
