Clapper: Obama’s Call For Investigation Into Russian Meddling Lead To Trump/Russia Collusion Investigation

CORRECTION of article previously titled: “Clapper Finally Admits It: Obama Responsible For Starting Russia-Gate Investigation”

Here is Clapper defending Obama’s role in investigating alleged Russian election meddling in a seldom seen video:

“If it weren’t for President Obama we might not have done the intelligence community assessment that we did that set up a whole sequence of events which are still unfolding today including Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation.

“President Obama is responsible for that.  It was he who tasked us to do that intelligence community assessment in the first place.”

Politifact points out that Clapper was responding to “President Donald Trump’s claim that Obama failed to address Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”, This is something we left out when we first published this article, which caused Politifact to flag the article as “False.”

It has been 15 months since Mueller was appointed as Special Counsel and he is yet to present any charges implicating President Trump or his campaign of “Russian Collusion.”  If we accept Politifact’s contention that Clapper’s word do not suggest that President Obama was involved in the launch and/or monitoring of the “Russian Collusion” investigation, we would argue that Peter Strzok’s text messages support the hypothesis.

Politifact says that “Clapper is talking about an assessment that Obama asked the intelligence community to carry out beginning in early December 2016, around the time the CIA had concluded Russia meddled in the election to help Trump and hurt Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.” The Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs identified a number of contradictions to that suggestion, most notably this one from point 7 on page 15 of the Majority Staff Report of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs United States Senate:

“On September 2, 2016, Page wrote about preparing talking points for Director Comey because “potus wants to know everything we’re doing.”   This text raises additional questions about the type and extent of President Obama’s personal involvement in the Clinton email scandal and the FBI investigation of it.”

On July 5, 2016 then-FBI Director James Comey held a press conference where he exonerated Hillary Clinton and put the investigation into her emails to bed.  The Weiner laptop was not seized until late September of 2016.

It only stands to reason that, Page was not referencing “potus” talking about the Clinton email case.  Unless President Obama was a micromanager on an unfathomable level, Page had to be referring to the Trump investigation.

As we now know, there is little doubt that the investigation into Donald Trump’s alleged involvement with Russia was well underway by September.  It is also known that both Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were deeply involved in that investigation so by no means is it a stretch to conclude that a message between them stating that “potus wants to know everything we’re doing” raises the distinct likelihood that President Obama was at least monitoring if not orchestrating the investigation.

In correcting our original article we concede that our report may have seemed misleading about the question Clapper was responding to. For the record Clapper was defending Obama from Trump’s claim that he did nothing to stop Russian election interference.

We will continue to monitor this story and look for future developments which devolve exactly what role, if any, Obama had in the creation of the Trump/Russia Collusion narrative and investigation.
