Elder Patriot – Russian forces operating in defense of Syria’s deposed dictator Bashir Assad’s regime have been prodding U.S. forces to test the American’s resolve for some time. So when Russia, that has been training, equipping, and backing the Assad loyalists since the outbreak of hostilities, and the “pro-regime forces” fired on US special operations troops where 500 pro-government forces attacked a headquarters used by SDF and US troops, the response probably came as a surprise to both the Russians and their Syrian counterparts.
The US responded to that attack last Wednesday with a furious barrage of air and artillery strikes. Initial reports credited the American response with killing 100 pro-Assad troops. A few days later sources told Bloomberg on Saturday that as many as 200 or 300 Russian mercenaries were killed in the attack.
This morning Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson tweeted that a Russian made T-72 battle tank that was “maneuvering with coordinated indirect fire on a defensive position occupied by Syrian Democratic Forces and Coalition advisers,” had been destroyed by fire from an American fighter.
The American’s response over the past week left little doubt that President Trump is not Barack Obama.
And, the Russians received that message loud and clear.
Russian President Vladimir Putin talked with U.S. President Donald Trump by phone Monday, but never brought up the military actions in Syria.
Even Vladimir Frolov, a former Russian diplomat and lawmaker who’s now an independent political analyst could only point out that, “This is a big scandal and a reason for an acute international crisis. But Russia will pretend nothing happened.”
Vitaly Naumkin, a senior adviser to Putin told an interviewer “No one wants to start a world war over a volunteer or a mercenary who wasn’t sent by the state and was hit by Americans.”
And no one wants to challenge the United States military now that the handcuffs have been removed and their mission is clear.
