After Years of Sacrifice & Dedicating His Life To Helping Veterans, Gary Sinise Is Being Awarded The Nation’s Highest Civilian Honor

Kirsters Baish| Emmy Award winning actor Gary Sinise has spent his life giving back to our country’s courageous veterans. Now, he has received the highest civilian award for all his hard work. Sinise starred in the cult classic movie, “Forrest Gump,” as well as “CSI: N.Y.” He was presented with the American Spirit Award by the WWII Museum. The New Orleans Times- Picayune reports that Republican Arizona Senator John McCain and Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg have also received the award in the past.

Last Fall, Sinise was given the Army’s George Catlett Marshall Medal, which is the highest civilian award there is. The Hollywood actor was given the award for his work giving back to our country’s military members. He has made numerous trips to entertain military members with his band named after his iconic “Forrest Gump” character, Lt. Dan.

The Army reported that Sinise explained upon receiving the award, “I am so humbled to be here and deeply moved to receive this honor. I know where my freedom comes from, and I will not forget our defenders.”

“It has been a great blessing to know there is something I can do to support the men and women in uniform who defend our nation,” he explained, as reported by the Association of the U.S. Army.

The actor has explained that he will always do whatever he can for our military.

“For as long as I’m able, I stand with you,” an AUSA press release quoted Sinise.

“We can strive to do a little more each day so you will know we will always have your back,” he said.

Sinise recently sat down for an interview during which he stated that he purposely named his band after his “Forrest Gump” character, who had lost his legs.

“I feel that the story of Lt. Dan is a good story, a positive story because he’s a wounded soldier who ends up being OK in the end and that’s of course what we want for everybody who serves our country when they come home from war, we want them to be OK,” he explained to KSWB.

He continued, “We want them to move on with their lives and in some ways, naming the band after the character is in honor of the troops and the people that serve our country and especially our wounded soldiers.”

During the interview, the actor went on to talk about why he started the Gary Sinise Foundation. The whole idea was to help wounded warriors. The foundation also lends a helping hand to first responders and their families as well.

“I believe in the men and women who serve our country, I’m thankful for them, I never take my freedom for granted or where it comes from.  I know it has to be fought for and protected and that’s done by the people who serve in the military,” Sinise stated.

He went on, “So having had some success and had the blessing of freedom and being able to do something with that, I wanted to create a foundation that will be able to serve and honor the needs of the folks that serve us and so that’s why I started the Gary Sinise Foundation.  I want people to know that they’re appreciated, that I’m grateful for them.”

It’s great to see such an important award going to someone who devotes so much of their time and energy into giving back to our troops after they sacrifice their lives for our freedoms every single day. Gary Sinise is a true American patriot.
